Dear Skinny Teas,
I know it's easy to prey on the insecurities of people, women especially. You preach quick fixes and magic formulas (because that's what we like to hear), but we all know they don't exist. Throw some money and an attractive celebrity or influencer holding or wearing your product, and consumers only see the body they wish to have, and not all the work (natural and unnatural) that goes into that body. Now all of sudden people think they can skip the gym and eat what they want.
Lucky for you guys, it's the perfect marketing strategy...
It's annoying and alarming to see the amount of your ads promoting “the do nothing and be rewarded mentality.” But how long will you keep up with this scam before people seriously get hurt?
You claim your product will do the following
- Boost metabolism
- Detox/Cleanse the body
- Suppress appetite
- Burn calories
- Reduce bloating
- Increase your energy
- Help maintain a healthy immune system
- Decrease water retention
Fun fact: drinking healthy amounts of water can do all of this and more!
Because your product is considered a dietary supplement, it is not subject to regulation by the FDA. By posting a simple one sentence disclaimer in tiny print on the bottom of your website stating that. This allows you to make claims about your products without responsibility if someone were to fall ill or not see the results they hoped for. And to date, you still have NO PUBLISHED RESEARCH that prove any of your claims.
Let’s discuss the magic ingredient in your skinny tea called Senna. It is an herb that comes from different species of the Cassia plant. Yes, Senna is generally regarded as safe and commonly used as an over the counter laxative. But when taken in large amounts, long term (more than 2 weeks) and without proper knowledge of its side effects, it can cause harm to the body.
Most of your skinny tea packages come in monthly subscriptions. And customers are encouraged to purchase more so they can get a discount.
By not stating the potential safety risks, your customers are putting their bodies at risk unknowingly. This Information should be included on your packaging and website.
Side effects of drinking skinny teas include
- Abdominal pain
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Fluid loss/Dehydration
The worst part, is your intestines become dependent on it for stimulation to have a bowel movement. So when you do stop drinking the tea, you become constipated and feel like you need to go back on it. It is a vicious cycle…
There are also important drug interactions your customers should be aware of.
- Contraceptives: Senna in large doses can interact with estrogen in some contraceptives, including the vaginal ring, patch or pills. It makes birth control less effective and increases the chances of accidental pregnancy.
- Warfarin: Is a drug used to treat blood clots, and when a person has diarrhea it can cause serious bleeding.
- Diuretics: They decrease potassium levels to help the body get rid of fluid. Senna is another form of a diuretic and when taken together, it can cause potassium levels to drop dangerously low.
- Estrogens: When used in hormone replacement therapy, Senna can prevent the estrogen from being absorbed properly.
- Horsetail and Licorice: Both herbs used for many purposes. But like a diuretic, it lowers potassium levels.
Of course you would never put this on your packaging, because you bank of the fact that people are looking for a quick fix.
I’m sure you have plenty of customers that will back you up and claim your skinny teas do work. But here is what is really happening…
1. You’re losing WATER weight, not FAT.
Drinking extra water and tea will cause your body to flush out excess salt which releases the retained water. Like I said earlier, drinking a lot of water will do this anyway, you don’t have to buy the tea.
2. You are eating less because you are full on water and tea.
Drinking extra water constantly will help suppress your appetite, and sometimes you’re not hungry, you’re just thirsty.
See you don’t need tea for this! Why do you think our bodies are comprised of 75% water? We NEED water to function.
3. Social media & spending your hard earned money will make you believe anything.
Your favorite celebrity just had a baby, and now she has abs 6 weeks later. Her “secret”, that package of skinny tea she’s holding. You spend your money on it because now you’re motivated to look like her. You may start to incorporate some new lifestyle changes in addition to drinking the teas. But I promise you, it’s not just the tea if you make even subtle lifestyle changes like walking more, eating less processed food, and cutting out soda.
Inform your customer thoroughly of the risks and side effects. Use real people who faithfully use your products. And always encourage exercise and nourishing your body with real food.
And don't worry, I'll address waist trainers too!
In good health,
